Mark Mazur Named IRS Director of Research, Analysis & Statistics of Income
WASHINGTON – The Internal Revenue Service today announced the selection of Mark J. Mazur as the Director of Research, Analysis and Statistics of Income. This new position within the restructured IRS will be located in National Headquarters.
“Mark’s strong background in business, economics and public policy makes him uniquely qualified for this key post,” said IRS Commissioner Charles O. Rossotti. “He will be responsible for conducting a wide range of research and analysis projects and will oversee the compilation and publication of IRS statistical data.”
The IRS has shifted from a geographically based agency to one that is organized around the four diverse groups of customers it serves. Under the revised structure, IRS National Headquarters will be comprised of six principal organizations, including the area led by Mazur. The Research, Analysis and Statistics of Income function is a merger and realignment of several former organizations including the National Office of Research, Office of Performance Evaluation and Risk Analysis, the Office of Revenue Analysis, and Statistics of Income.
Mazur comes to the IRS from the Department of Energy, where he served as Director of Policy and Chief Economist, and Acting Administrator of the Energy Information Administration. He began his career as a tax analyst for General Motors, but went on to hold several high-level jobs within the federal government. In addition, Mazur has taught and undertaken various research projects at Carnegie-Mellon University.
Mazur earned a Bachelor of Science degree in financial administration while at Michigan State University and holds a Master’s degree and Ph.D. from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business.
