IRS Issues FY 2001 Data Book
WASHINGTON - The Internal Revenue Service today announced the release of its Fiscal Year 2001 Data Book on the Tax Stats portion of its Web site, www.irs.gov.
The Internal Revenue Service Data Book is published annually by the Internal Revenue Service and contains statistical tables and organizational information on a fiscal year basis. This volume pertains to Fiscal 2001 October 1, 2000, through September 30, 2001. The 56-page report provides data in 32 statistical tables, with accompanying footnotes, on collecting the revenue, enforcing the law, assisting the taxpayer, and managing the system, as well as lists and a chart about the structure and administration of the IRS itself. Five of the tables present data by State.
The FY 2001 Data Book is the first to present a full year of data under the new organizational structure mandated by the IRS Restructuring and Reform Act of 1998.
The new organization, that became effective on the first day of Fiscal Year 2001, is also reflected in the material on IRS structure and administration presented at the back of the Data Book. For FY 2001, gross collections totaled $2.13 trillion from 228 million returns filed. Of the 129.8 million individual income tax returns filed, 40.2 million were filed electronically. The total amount of refunds issued was $253.9 billion, of which $206.8 billion was for individual income tax returns.
To access the FY 2001 IRS Data Book from the IRS Web site homepage, click on Tax Stats in the upper left-hand corner. From the Tax Stats page, select IRS Data Book under Statistical Publications. The complete 2001 report is available in PDF format, and each of the 32 tables is available separately as an Excel spreadsheet.
The site also has the statistical tables for six previous years (FY 1995-FY 2000) following the FY 2001 data. However, the complete report in PDF format is available for the FY 2000 and FY 2001 reports only.
The printed version of the FY 2001 IRS Data Book, Publication 55B, should be available for sale by mid-April from the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office by calling (202) 512-1800 or faxing (202) 512-2250, or by writing: Superintendent of Documents, P.O.
