IRS Awards $7 Million to Tax Clinics
Aiding Low-Income Taxpayers

WASHINGTON - As part of the effort to provide top-quality service to America´s taxpayers, the IRS has awarded more than $7 million for legal assistance this year to low-income taxpayer clinics. The Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) grant program, now in its fourth year, is designed to help organizations provide low-cost legal assistance to taxpayers to resolve tax disputes. Organizations operating independent taxpayer clinics can qualify to receive up to $100,000 in matching funds through the program.

This year, 127 organizations will receive funding under the program, which reflects a 25 percent increase in the number of organizations funded last year.

This year´s LITC recipients represent non-profit organizations and accredited academic institutions from 43 states and the District of Columbia.

In its inaugural year, the LITC program awarded nearly $1.5 million in grants for fiscal year (FY) 1999, provided $5 million for FY 2000, $6 million for FY 2001 and over $7 million for the current year.

For the FY 2002 program, 149 organizations, representing 43 states and the District of Columbia, submitted applications for LITC grants totaling over $10.6 million. Last year, 141 grant applications requesting funds were submitted.

The growth of interest in the Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic program moves us one step closer to getting tax help to people at all income levels.
