IRS Awards 102 Tax Clinics $6 Million to
Help Low-Income Taxpayers

WASHINGTON - As a part of the effort to provide top quality service to America´s taxpayers, the IRS has awarded $6 million for legal assistance this year to low-income taxpayer clinics.

The Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic (LITC) grant program, now in its third year, is designed to help organizations provide low-cost legal assistance to taxpayers to resolve tax disputes. Organizations operating independent taxpayer clinics can qualify to receive up to $100,000 in matching funds through the program.

This year, 102 organizations will receive funding under the program, which reflects a 24% increase in the number of organizations funded last year.

This year´s LITC recipients represent non-profit organizations and accredited academic institutions from 38 states and the District of Columbia.

In its inaugural year, the LITC program awarded nearly $1.5 million in grants for fiscal year (FY) 1999 and provided $5 million for FY 2000 and $6 million for the current year, FY 2001.

For the FY 2001 program, 141 organizations, representing 40 states and the District of Columbia, submitted applications for LITC grants totaling over $9.8 million. Last year, 88 grant applications requesting funds were submitted.

“We´re pleased to see more and more interest in a program that reaches an important group of taxpayers,” said IRS Commissioner Charles O. Rossotti. “The growth of interest in the Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic program moves us one step closer to getting tax help to people at all income levels.”
