Jardini Named Criminal Investigation Division Counsel
WASHINGTON - The Internal Revenue Service today announced the appointment of Nancy J. Jardini to the position of Division Counsel/Associate Chief Counsel (Criminal Tax).
"Nancy brings a special combination of energy, leadership skills, and legal expertise to the Criminal Tax Division of the Office of Chief Counsel as well as an in-depth understanding of the Criminal Investigation Division of the IRS," said IRS Chief Counsel Stuart Brown.
As the new Division Counsel, Jardini will report to Brown and will work alongside Mark Matthews, Chief, Criminal Investigation.
Jardini received a bachelor´s degree from Chatham College and a juris doctor degree from Villanova University. After practicing as a criminal defense attorney for over eight years, she was awarded a Fulbright Senior Lecture grant to teach criminal and constitutional law at the International Law Institute in Moscow, Russia. In 1996, she joined the United States Department of Justice as a trial attorney in the Fraud Section of the Criminal Division where she specialized in the investigation and prosecution of large-scale white-collar crimes.
In 1999, Jardini agreed to act as Deputy Special Counsel to the William Webster Commission, which made a comprehensive study of the Criminal Investigation Division of the IRS. In that capacity, she oversaw the staff and day-to-day operations of the Commission and played a key role in the preparation of the study, known as the Webster Commission Report. The Webster Commission Report resulted in fundamental procedural and organizational changes within the IRS Criminal Investigation Division and also led to the reorganization of the Criminal Tax Division of the Office of Chief Counsel.
As Division Counsel/Associate Chief Counsel (Criminal Tax), Jardini will direct the more than 70 attorneys nationwide who are assigned to the Criminal Tax Division of the Office of Chief Counsel and provide expert legal advice to Criminal Investigation Special Agents during all stages of their investigations. She is also responsible for providing policy and procedure guidance for the Office of Chief Counsel and the IRS Criminal Investigation Division in all matters related to criminal tax.
