IRS Announces March Problem Solving Days

WASHINGTON - The Internal Revenue Service today announced the locations of its March Problem Solving Days. At 33 locations across the country, individuals with long-standing tax problems will have the opportunity to meet face to face with IRS employees who will work to find solutions. Taxpayers can find the location nearest them by accessing the IRS homepage on the World Wide Web -- www.irs.ustreas.gov -- or calling the IRS toll-free at 1-800-829-1040.

"Problem Solving Days are excellent opportunities for those people who just haven't been able to get their problems solved over the phone or by mail," said Internal Revenue Service Commissioner Charles 0. Rossotti. "This has been an extremely successful effort by the IRS to provide better customer service and help people to meet their tax obligations."

The IRS began hosting monthly Problem Solving Days in November. Since then, more than 20,000 taxpayers have met with IRS representatives and nearly 75 percent of the problems have been resolved. In addition, many taxpayers who called to set up an appointment for Problem Solving Day had their problems resolved over the phone, and never had to come in person.

Taxpayers don't have to wait until Problem Solving Day to resolve their tax problems, the IRS said. They can call the IRS toll-free line -- 1-800-829-1040 -anytime to ask that their problem be referred to the Taxpayer Advocate. The Taxpayer Advocate is the primary champion for taxpayers with problems that cannot be resolved through ordinary channels.
