Petschek Named Assistant Commissioner Employee Plans, Exempt Organizations
WASHINGTON - Commissioner of Internal Revenue Margaret Milner
Richardson announced the selection of Evelyn A. Petschek as
Assistant Commissioner (Employee Plans and Exempt Organizations).
Petschek, who was the Director of the Employee Plans Division,
replaces James McGovern, who retired in February.
In this position, she is the principal assistant to the
Commissioner in the uniform interpretation and application of the
federal tax laws on employee plans, exempt organizations, and
tax-exempt bonds, and provides direction of these activities
throughout the nation. Employee plans and exempt organizations is
unique in the IRS in that its primary function is regulatory rather
than tax collection.
"This is a complex area that has grown explosively in recent
years," Richardson said. "Evelyn has proven that she has the talent
to deftly deal with the issues we'll be facing."
Prior to joining IRS in 1993, Petschek served in the Treasury
Department's Office of Tax Policy as Benefits Tax Counsel. She
joined Treasury in 1990 as Deputy Benefits Tax Counsel. Before
entering public service, Petschek was a partner in the law firm of
Patterson, BeIknap, Webb & Tyler.
She holds J.D. and LL.M. in Taxation degrees from New York
University School of Law.
